As an accountant and a business leader I know the importance of commercial and financial success, good governance and effective risk management if business is to succeed. I have developed these skills and knowledge through qualifying as a chartered accountant, my consultancy work as well as regulating financial services business in Jersey. I understand, having held the role of Director in both the commercial and third sector as well as regularly performing governance reviews, that good directors are critical to good business. I am confident that I have the experience and knowledge to be a good director.
I also see the unintended consequences of only focusing on profit and it is for that reason that I am so keen to support the long term success of the Channel Islands Co-operative as a director. The Channel Islands Co-operative works through a business model that seeks to balance profit with the needs of the community, our natural environment, it's employees, its suppliers and our customers. This type of business model is one that distributes wealth beyond a small number of shareholders, provides meaningful employment and cares for the community it operates in. To be a good director for a business that seeks to achieve these goals takes a director that can exercise holistic, balanced decision making and think beyond the short term impact of their decisions to the long term effects.
It takes more than professional skills to be a good director. It also takes someone that can work well with others under pressure, can debate contrary views respectfully and can consider problems in a more creative way. I would bring all of those attributes to the board as well as creating better diversity of thought and skills.
With my practical and academic experience I bring finance and sustainability expertise to the board of directors which are listed as priority skills for potential directors. With a number of years of experience reporting to audit committees I am confident that I can also make a meaningful contribution to the audit committee should that be beneficial.
In summary I am excited to work hard for a business that aligns with my values, will benefit from my experience and supports the community beyond its commercial offering. I will commit the time, energy and focus to this role that it needs to ensure the co-op is successful in meeting its objectives and meeting the needs of it's customers.
